Description: This book describes in detail the cause and effects of spina bifida with detailed descriptions of all involved systems and associated problems. It is written for both the parents of children with spina bifida as well as those providing medical care to them. This updated edition with a new preface replaces the 1997 edition.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an insightful view into the life of spina bifida patients and their families. This is an important subject as these children often have subspecialty care but not always primary care. Issues surrounding this condition should be understood by all involved in care of these patients. This book fills that void.
Audience: The book was written for families of patients as well as medical and other professional personnel involved in their care. It is useful both for generalists as well as specialty physicians who care for the child. The author is very credible in this area.
Features: Specific issues of the cause of spina bifida, treatment and prevention are covered. The book provides a description of issues, both medical and psychosocial, that are significant to these patients at various stages of their life from infancy to adult. This book does an excellent job of providing both information as well as perspective from both the practitioner's and patient's points of view. It is very helpful having information clearly marked for patients and for medical professionals.
Assessment: This is an excellent, readable book that provides an abundance of useful and easily understandable information about this complex issue. I will recommend it highly to my patients and residents in trying to understand spina bifida.
Library Journal
Spina bifida ("divided spine") is a common if complex birth defect occurring during embryonic development and resulting in moderate to profound disabilities. Pediatrician Sandler has written a valuable handbook that addresses patients' biopsychosocial and developmental needs from birth through adolescence and into adulthood. Sandler's holistic approach encourages families to focus more on the child and less on the disability while providing abundant information about this condition. Parents of children with spina bifida add their personal insights in several chapters. Included are a glossary, a list of spina bifida associations, and suggested readings. Reassuring but realistic, this uniquely multidisciplinary guide is for parents, pediatricians, neurosurgeons, orthopedists, rehabilitation and physical therapists, teachers, and others involved in the care of children and adults with spina bifida. Highly recommended.Anne C. Tomlin, Auburn Memorial Hosp. Lib., N.Y.

Modern Primitives: An Investigation of Contemporary Adornment and Ritual
Author: V Val
Modern Primitives is the Bible of Body Modification, including tattoo, piercing, and scarification. An amazing 30-page interview with Fakir Musafar, as well as in-depth interviews with Ed Hardy, Lyle Tuttle, Leo Zulueta, Bill Salmon, Vyvyn Lazonga and other tattoo giants is featured. This book describes non-tribal people who felt and responded to strong "primitive" urges. A classic; this is the first book to chart out all the basic ways to creatively express one's individuality using the body as a canvas, especially emphasizing the need to find something rooted in one's own personal experiences and mythology. Inspiring and wide-ranging, Modern Primitives provides a vast anthropological context for implementing a truly unique body-decoration expression. An illuminating section of quotations rounds out this volume.
